Tristan Roberts, Editorial Director, BuildingGreen, Inc., is an expert on LEED-EBOM. He'll be checking in regularly to answer your questions.
Let's start with this one: Tristan, why do you think, especially in the last few years, LEED-EBOM has seemed to grow in popularity much more so than it did the first several years the rating system was available?
Greg, i think it's a simple matter of the time it takes something to get out into the industry. LEED-EBOM was launched in 2004—by contrast, LEED-NC 2.0 came out in 2000. LEED was also developed more with new office buildings in mind, so it has taken a few years for the mindset to switch to one where O&M is perceived as having central importance to meeting environmental imperatives. Fortunately, that's now a reality, with LEED-EBOM registered square footage outpacing NC. The trend is clear: green O&M matters, and we all have a lot of work to do.
Thanks, Greg! Good to be on the forum. Feel free to hit me up with any LEED-EBOM certification questions.
