PUE, or power usage effective, provides a widely recognized way of evaluating the energy efficiency of a data center and is often helpful in efforts to reduce energy use. But no single metric can guide decisions about data center energy efficiency, say Jonathan Koomey, a well-known data center researcher based at Stanford University. Instead, facility managers should look to understand the organization's goals for the data center, and factor those objectives into strategies to boost efficiency. Doing that means understanding the data center from the IT perspective. Click here to read more about why facility managers have to look beyond PUE to get a big-picture view of data center energy efficiency.
