Reading List for Facility Managers

NFMT just wrapped up in Baltimore last week. While there, I tried to keep my ears open for suggestion on good books for facility mangers to add to their reading list. Here are two that I jotted down:

  • "Leaders Eat Last" by Simon Sinek. In this exploration of effective team dynamics, Sinek comes to the conclusion that "if businesses could adopt (a) supportive mentality, employees would be more motivated to take bigger risks, because they’d know their colleagues and company would back them up, no matter what," according to Goodreads.
  • "It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy" by Michael Abrashoff. In this book, Abrashoff shares management lessons learned from his time as captain of the USS Benfold, where his strategies paid off in a disciplined, dedicated, and highly-productive crew.

In one of the sessions at NFMT, I learned that it is important to look for leadership best practices beyond the world of facilities management, and these two books seem to fit that challenge handily. What would you add to the reading list?
