A big change is coming to your HVAC system: a new generation of refrigerants. HFCs like R-134a, R-404a, R-407a, and R-410a are being phased down because of their high global warming potential. In their place will be HFO and "natural" refrigerants like carbon dioxide, ammonia, butane, and propane. The transition will take years to complete, but it's already underway. HVAC equipment manufacturers now offer some products that use new refrigerants, and refrigerant manufacturers are developing other alternatives. Now is a good time for FMs to start learning about the new options. Click here to read a status report that explains why the change is coming and what FMs can expect.
