I just left $50 on the table because by the time I made time to do the utility's paperwork on the rebate for my Energy Star washer, I'd missed the rebate deadline by 10 days. After kicking myself for not setting up a calendar reminder, I thought well, that's how it goes. You have to have your details straight and stay on top of deadlines if you want to get rebate cash back into your pocket, whether that's for your washer at home or your LED retrofit at your facility.
This Building Operating Management article provides a great overview on how to get the most out of utility rebate programs, starting with how to stay on top of things so you actually qualify for the rebate. The first piece of advice is to get your rebate application in early, as funds are limited and can sometimes be used up as early as March.
It's still worth checking in to see if there's anything left in the pot, even if you weren't an early bird, says Doug Bloom, CEO of RealWinWin. He says utilities having extra money is just as common a scenario as having already run out of funds. Never hurts to ask, right?
