High-Performance Lighting, or More Light vs. Good Light

Lighting has to be the building system category that causes my jaw to drop more than any other. That, and elevators that can move horizontally…. and building exteriors that clean themselves…. and transparent PV built right into window units. Okay. So, just about any building tech can make me geek out right about now. But lighting is definitely having a renaissance moment — an amazing, mind-boggling, eye-popping renaissance moment.

Check out one of Building Operating Management’s latest articles on where lighting tech stands today, with a particular focus on high-performance strategies and technologies. What I appreciate most, besides all the inventive ways lighting systems are being designed, is what seems to be a more refined sense across the board of the difference between “more light” and “good light.” For example, daylight is great, but daylighting requires more than just opening the blinds.

Light is an intrinsic element in the human experience, and evidence continues to build that good light matters. What have been your best strategies for improving the light quality in your facilities?
