Learning to Work With AHJs

As I continue to research available tools and best practices for emergency response procedures, I came across this great piece in Building Operating Management by NFPA's Robert Solomon on how to work with your AHJ. Solomon writes, "Think of AHJs as customer service representatives. They help with carrying out the 'policy' (adopted code) for the jurisdiction." I wonder how many facility managers think of AHJs as customer service reps, there to help them, or if there is a perception that AHJs mostly just carry a big stick.

Solomon also discusses the fact that the authority having jurisdiction in your facility may be multiple entities, depending on the facility type and use. I appreciate how Solomon discusses developing a relationship with AHJs, creating a partner relationship rather than an adversarial relationship.
